In times of crisis and challenge, it is heartening to see the resilience and compassion of young people who are determined to make a difference by giving of themselves on a personal level. On October 7, Israel was brutally attacked by the terrorist organization Hamas, who simultaneously fired rockets into Israel while infiltrating Israeli territory in a murderous assault, massacring 1400 innocent people and taking more than 200 hostages who are still being held captive in Gaza. Homes were burnt, people slaughtered indiscriminately, bodies were desecrated, and entire families were murdered or taken hostage. In the wake of this devastating national crisis, idealistic and highly motivated youth throughout the country have emerged as a beacon of hope through their dedicated volunteer efforts.

Responding to a multitude of challenges
A month now after war was declared, thousands of Israelis have been displaced, fleeing their homes in the south of Israel in fear. They have lost everything, their homes and their livelihood, and suffer deeply from unfathomable trauma. In the midst of these difficulties, Israeli youth have taken it upon themselves to be a force for good, The Times of Israel reported.

Many young volunteers have recognized the importance of reaching out to those in need. They have been actively involved in a wide range of volunteer efforts, ensuring that no one is left behind during these trying times. A special initiative to publicize wartime volunteer opportunities was launched by Ruach Tova, (Good Spirit in Hebrew), a part of the Arison Group, that coordinates volunteering efforts throughout Israel. Project staff are working non stop to connect organizations in need of assistance with potential volunteers who are seeking to help.

“The young volunteers worked hard to fix up the shelter which was in very poor condition. They cleaned, painted the walls, brought in toys and games. Despite the difficulties, the evacuees are happy that there are people who are reaching out, trying to help them. It touches their hearts and gives them a sense of hope.” Amit Ayalon, who is coordinating volunteer efforts for evacuees at the Debrah Brown Hotel in Tel Aviv, told Goodnet.

A show of solidarity
Youth in Israel have also played a pivotal role in strengthening communities by organizing events and activities that foster a sense of togetherness and unity. Through volunteering, they aim to provide support and solidarity to the people whose lives have been impacted by the current situation and let them know that they are not alone in their pain.

“In light of the situation, the youth understand the need to work together, that ultimately we are all dependent on each other and need to join together. Everyone is working their hardest, giving their all,” Shuval Goldman,  Founder and CEO of the Noar Mitnadev organization, shared with Goodnet.

Compassion and kindness
One of the most remarkable aspects of the youth’s volunteerism in Israel is the inspiration they provide to others. The impact of their actions extends far beyond the immediate assistance they provide; they are sowing the seeds of a more compassionate and caring society.

“Volunteering really helped me a lot, because then I don’t feel helpless. When I’m sitting at home, I feel like I’m just waiting for something bad to happen. I feel awful when I’m just sitting and doing nothing,” Tel Aviv teen Bar Mandel told the Times of Israel. Tel Aviv residents have been driven into shelters to protect themselves from ongoing Hamas launched rocket barrages leaving the city’s usually bustling streets silent. Many Tel Aviv youth are happy to do what they can to keep busy and contribute to the cause.

The youth of Israel have demonstrated exceptional resilience and compassion during these challenging times. Their volunteer efforts have not only provided practical assistance but have also instilled a sense of hope, unity, and community spirit. As they continue to rise to the challenge, these young volunteers serve as a shining example of the positive change that can be achieved through selfless dedication and a determination to make a difference, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
